ABOUT ASOMA

BACKGROUND

Asoma Conservation Uganda Limited is a non-profit organization founded in 2025 by three women journalists in response to the persistent impacts of climate change, which have become a growing challenge in Uganda due to increased environmental degradation.

Based in Wakiso District, the organization is committed to promoting environmental conservation by placing women and children, the future generation, at the forefront of climate action and sustainability efforts.

Why Women?

Women are among the most affected by climate change, yet they remain the least empowered. In rural and peri-urban communities, women are responsible for farming, fetching water, collecting firewood and managing household waste. They are the first to feel the effects when soil loses fertility, water sources dry up or charcoal becomes scarce. Yet, they rarely have access to environmental training, green skills, leadership platforms or alternative livelihood opportunities.

Why Children?

Children are taught about the environment but are not adequately equipped with practical skills. Although environmental education is included in the school curriculum, it is largely taught theoretically. Most schools have no functional environmental clubs, tree nurseries, demonstration gardens or proper waste management systems. Children memorise definitions for examinations but graduate without planting a single tree or knowing how to conserve water at home.

Conservation has largely been event-based rather than lifestyle-based, yet it needs to become a daily habit at home and at school. Most environmental programmes do not adequately prioritise women and children. This is where Asoma comes in, seeking to use these two change agents — women and children — to champion climate action in Uganda.
